ABOUT US

Picture
Clear Steps is an Australian company.

Clear Steps developed first as our family’s way of life, taught to me by my son Taylor and the fantastic team of therapists that have been involved in his life.

Taylor was born with Down Syndrome. Down Syndrome tends to conjure up a stereotype for many people, but in reality the personalities, abilities, health and support needs cover a very wide spectrum. Like everyone, Taylor has personal strengths in some areas and significant weaknesses in others.

Breaking tasks, concepts, life and social skills, and even social occasions, into smaller bite-sized pieces enables building on strengths, reduces anxiety and confusion, and nurtures independence.
It creates more successes to celebrate too!

Let me give you an example...

Taylor struggled to learn to feed himself. What to me was such a simple task was to Taylor too herculean. So we broke it into steps, practicing each motion MANY times, everytime repeating the steps aloud.

hand on spoon – scoop – up – in

So instead of one task (“eat your dinner”), there were now four tasks. He achieved the “in” task first, giving us a success to celebrate. So we would hand-over-hand support him through the other steps, always giving him the chance to initiate it himself. And gradually, step by step he got it. At 10 years old we would still be wasting our time to tell him to eat his dinner, instead we say “Hand on spoon” and then away he goes… well, most days :)

The same philosophy applies to social occasions. Stepping outside the everyday routines of homelife can be a confusing, anxiety-ridden chaotic bedlam of happenings for some. Breaking the occasion into its steps
“drive - play – eat lunch – play – drive home” can help to reduce the uncertainty of what is to come.
In my past life I was a high school teacher of Japanese to Australian kids. This was a career I had avoided but fell into anyway and quickly grew to love, finding I had always been a teacher at heart. Many Australians outside of Sydney had little exposure to foreign languages at the time. I had to learn to find building blocks and create achievable steps to build students’ confidence in a subject many found daunting at the outset. Reflection has highlighted the preparation this was for parenting a child with special needs.

Following Taylor we have had two more beautiful boys. These two boys have further proved the advantages of having the same clear steps in developing their understanding, knowledge and skills as they grow.

I am blessed to have had the education, life experiences, and company – from therapists to students, colleagues to friends & family – that I have had. I trust that this symbiosis will in turn encourage, empower and enable you and yours.
